Since I was a bit short on time to go get it fixed, I decided to do a temporary fix by bypassing the heater matrix. I had some extra pvc pipes and decide to use them. Made a U-Shaped bypass for the heater matrix.
The problem with this's car airconditioning system is that it uses the heater matrix to regulate cabin temperature. It does not have a thermostat. So, for the next few weeks untill I had time to repair the heater matrix, I was experiencing Eskimo World every time I drove. Had to manually on and off the air-cond.
I went to a couple of workshops and they told me that the dashboard needs to be removed in order to repair the heater matrix. Luckily for my good friend Michelin V-k Badman's quick guide, I was able to repair the heater matrix without having to remove the dashboard.
Start by removing the glovebox and loosening up the center console.
Once the glove compartment is removed, you'll have full access to the heater matrix.
Next, is to loosen up the heater matrix. There are 2 screws and 1 nut which needs to be undone
Once this is done, then gentle remove the long part of the heater matrix. Once this is taken out then gently pull out the heater matrix from the blower. The heater matrix is held in place by 2 clips. Undo these clips and pull it out slowly.
You might have to pull a bit on that part of the dashboard for the heater matrix to slide out. Once it out, I tested for leaks by using high preassure water.
The leak was caused by these 2 o-rings. I was a bit lazy to go out and get original replacement o-rings. Dug my tool box for it and managed to get similar sized o rings. These are common o - rings which can be bought anywhere. They are slightly different than the original ones but can be used.
Once the o-rings were replaced, checked for leaks, and then proceeded to fix back everyhing. Quite an easy DIY. Took less than 2 hours to complete this job.

DeleteThen I'm not sure how you menaged to separate the long part(pipes) from the heater...I have the same problem and I want to fix it by myself, but it seems to me that there is not enough space to pull out pipes from heater (if it's impossible to pull them forward at least for inch or two). After removing all the bolts and screw, it is possible to remove the long pipes. Space is tight but it can be done. Just have to use a bit of force to pull it out, but be careful not to break anything.
DeleteHey, first of all thanks for all the help so far! Unfortunately I'm having the same problem. Loosening the middle console didn't do anything for me so space is still too tight. Will now remove the middle console (blowers) to see if I can create some more space. Will let you know it it worked out!
DeleteOkay, I managed to get the pipes out (left hand drive model). Loosening up the middle console didn't work out so you might as well skip that, but the key is to pull out the heater matrix a little so you have just the little bit extra space to remove the pipes. I did brake the annoying 3 clips because only screws will do as well and easier to pull it out without help. I only replaces the o-rings just to check if that was the problem, I think it is because it was all white around them (dried coolant I presume). It should be possible to take the whole heater matrix out it you are willing to saw a piece out of the dashboard. You don't really see it from the seats since there is another detachable piece above/over it. This just saved me about 450 Euros as that was the quote from the garage (NL) so thanks x1000 and good luck everyone! You can do it ;)

(neighbor from Serbia; it can be done, you just need a little more force :) I do it with large screwdriver, so you can try)

DeleteHi I just seen your fix, is this by any chance a common problem as I have just bought a 206 1.9d that has had the heater matrix ubended onto itself as well as the cooland into the engine ubended onto itself, if it is a common problem I presume when I have fixed it and reconnected everything up the top pipe on the engine bay side goes to the upper connector on the engine? without another 206 to compare it to I have no idea lol :) Thanks for your help in advance :)
ReplyDeleteThis seems to be a common problem with the 206. The top pipe is the one with the bleed screw and this goes to the upper connector. :-)
DeleteIs this an easy job to do? Mine just gave up on me as well. I'm pulling my hair out with the amount of things that have broken on this car. I have a pug 206 1.4 2002, had the clutch overhauled last week and two days later I find a lake on the passenger side floor. My mechanic wants to replace the entire heater matrix, and the estimation he gave me is something I'm definitely not willing to pay. He didn't even check it out, for all I know my rings might be worn too! Let's say I know absolutely zero about cars, will I be able to do this? Your instructions are great, I'm judt scared I pull everything out and then not how or where to put them back in again..

If you're good with spanners and screwdrivers, this should be an easy job. If will help if u take photos as u disassemble everything. The heater matrix itself seldom leaks. Most probably its the rings. You won't know until you have it removed. If you a need one, I have a used heater matrix up for sale.

ReplyDeleteI followed the guide and found it perfect, i would mention though I used two o rings on each one, the front ones were slightly thinner and rear ones thicker, as the heater matrix has a two stage opening the two fitted better and will also withstand the high pressures and temperatures over time.
Although the originals would be a better replacement.

ReplyDeletehi all the problem i have is that the bottom hose is warm, top hose is cold. i did use a pipe to blow through in the inlet and outlet, it all seemed clear ?.bleed the system,eveything else is fine, i might add that i changed the thermostat and the one i took out had no middle?, so a problem with something then?. i have not had the car long , so now in ythinking the water pump may be the problem ?,i know /herd that the fins come off or wear away,what ever it does sound like whats causing the problems, anyone have any other idears ?

ReplyDeleteI have changed the o rings without taking matrix out, screwed additional screws cause there was only one, it is still leaking although much less. Screwing bolts off and on was the biggest part of the job :D
ReplyDeleteHi and thanks for all the comments. With my neighbours help we are also effecting a repair to a RH drive car. We found it was not necessary to remove the heater matrix but just to move it a little and separate the two plastic pipes at the flange where they enter. This is also where the leak is and is due to those rubber rings. Now at the stage of determining what type of O ring to replace the originals. Probably will use stock O rings from hardware store as the dealers may only sell them within a complete kit.

Sorry folks forgot to mention it was NOT necessary to drain the coolant from the engine. The engine bay pipework did not leak much fluid to speak of. Then secure them in a somewhat elevated position to ensure they do not precipitate draining.

ReplyDeleteThanks for tips and photos, those encouraged me to do the job myself. My car is a 2005 1.4 LHD. The double pipe system came out by pulling the matrix an inch out, then losening the pipes from the matrix, and forcing gently the parts apart with a long screwdriver. The worn O-rings caused the leak. I put new rings, outer diameter 21 mm and thickness 2,7 mm.
